As the RMS Titanic was sinking in the North Atlantic on the calm, starlit night of April 15, 1912, The Wallace Hartley Band courageously played on as the black, frigid North Atlantic Ocean slowly, inevitably, swallowed the giant ocean liner. Some accounts say their last song was “Autumn,” while other accounts say it was the melody from a hymn titled “Nearer My God to Thee,” first composed as “Bethany,” by Lowell Mason in 1856.
Perhaps more than any band ever, The Wallace Hartley Band deserves a musical homage, even if over a hundred years later. We hope you find this song, an adaptation of Lowell’s melody, a worthy remembrance.
